Ocular Surgery

Our eye doctors offer a range of in-office surgical procedures. This means you don’t always need to wait on long lines in a hospital emergency room to receive medical eye care. Our eye doctor offers professional treatment to resolve many types of eye injury, trauma and painful ocular conditions. If necessary, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist for further treatment.

Corneal Foreign Body Removal

If a foreign object, such as sand or a wood splinter becomes stuck in your cornea, it must be removed as soon as possible. When left untreated, dangerous complications can result, such as eye infection and ocular necrosis. To extract the foreign body safely and precisely, our eye doctor will usually apply numbing eye drops and use specialized tools. Following the procedure, you may need to apply antibiotic ointment, especially if you have any corneal abrasions.

Conjunctival Foreign Body Removal

The white of your eye is covered by a thin mucous membrane, called the conjunctiva. Foreign bodies, such as eyelashes and cosmetics, often become stuck on the conjunctiva. Our eye doctor will remove them gently to relieve your discomfort and prevent complications or ocular damage.

Eyelid Foreign Body Removal

If a foreign object becomes stuck beneath your eyelid, we will evert your eyelid gently to remove it. Typically, our eye doctor can accomplish this with a cotton-tipped swab.

Eyelash Epilation

Epilation is the removal of hair from your body. In order to treat certain eyelash conditions, such as trichiasis and distichiasis, we may need to perform eyelash epilation surgically or with the aid of manual forceps. Basically, these conditions refer to when eyelashes don’t grow in the right direction, thereby irritating your cornea.

Punctal Dilation

A blocked tear duct does not allow healthy tear drainage, which can lead to eye infection and excessive tearing. Punctal dilation opens the obstruction. Once the punctum is dilated, we will flush out your tear drainage passages with sterile saline.

Canalicular Probing

Probing is used to assess the health condition of your lacrimal tear drainage system. This procedure is safe, and it provides essential diagnostic information for evaluating eye injury or planning ocular surgery. In general, topical anesthesia is applied to enhance patient comfort.

Lacrimal Duct Closure

This ocular surgery blocks the tear drainage system with silicone plugs so that tears can disperse more efficiently across the surface of your eye. Also called punctal plug insertion, it is often used to treat dry eye syndrome, Sjorgen’s syndrome, recurrent corneal erosion and keratitis.

Removal of Foreign Body from the Lacrimal Passages

Your lacrimal passages must be unobstructed to enable tears to flow properly. If any objects get in the way, we’ll remove them surgically.
